2K Hires Apex Legends Producer to Revitalize Struggling Hero Shooter Ambitious Title

2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently developing the upcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.

Leadership Shift Comes After Mixed Response

The new appointee assumes the role of studio head at 31st Union following the dismissal of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's disappointing early showing last autumn.

On Wednesday, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated team members about this decision through an internal memo, which highlighted that playtesting had shown the need for a distinct vision.

The president expressed that the developers is now overhauling Project Ethos with a renewed approach, aiming to satisfy player expectations.

Trend of Strategic Acquisitions

The news mirrors a comparable step taken by the publisher in August, when they brought on an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.

Here is the entire text from the president's communication:

Hello Everyone—

I know you all just completed your gathering - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Previously I shared you all a message, I stated the following: “I believe in this crew. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative developers we have had the chance to collaborate with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to endure.”

Through your commitment and adaptability, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.

The community feedback from last autumn’s Project ETHOS demo was informative. It affirmed the potential of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the necessity for a sharper brand.

It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the input to consideration and reimagined Project ETHOS with a revitalized vision - one that’s ready to fulfill its ambition to our fans.

Our confidence in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To advance the incredible advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce the new hire as the latest Lead of 31st Union. Following several months of discussions, he comes aboard us on next week.

Ben’s guidance and experience in the PVP shooter genre is considerable, having dedicated the past decade and a half creating and managing some of the most recognizable series in gaming, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.

Please join me in receiving him in the coming days. We are all eager to continue seeing the progress of Project ETHOS in the months to come.

The President

Background of the New Leader

Brinkman currently holds the role of executive producer and head of production at the renowned studio for their flagship title. He previously worked at Treyarch and Activision in multiple production roles on the Call of Duty series, and, prior to that, had assignments at other industry leaders.

Title Details and Vision

The upcoming game was unveiled in October 2024 in conjunction with a community playtest. Then, 31st Union portrayed the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an innovative evolution on the category."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the description explains. "Face the rivals with unique powers, challenges, and tests that evolve every round. Will you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively aim high, gamble everything, and trust your team can secure victory? The decision is up to you."

The game has not yet received an announced release date or supported systems, but enthusiasts can look forward to more updates as development continues.
