Area Law Enforcement
Roughly 50 cars have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Automobiles, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a official communication.
Law enforcement state they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued fluid.
The fluid had been applied in the shape of a swastika, they reported.
Law enforcement then discovered multiple other marked automobiles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Police state preliminary tests suggest the substance was most likely human blood.
"Currently there is no lead as to where it came from; authorities are not yet cognizant of any injuries in association with the event," they stated.
Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the community for details.
A high-ranking representative stated the vandalism rendered him speechless and had to be resolved rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the core of Hanau and revives the wounds of the right-wing violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on online, mentioning the death of nine victims by a assailant targeting people of migrant background in February 2020.
