Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.
The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a military coup in the ninth month and given more than a 27-year term in prison, but he remained under confinement pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.
This involved attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a possible escape.
Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns
In a document approving the custody, the magistrate said intelligence from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his son.
His son, his son Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a assembly of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.
His son wrote on digital networks on last Friday: Will you battle for your country, or see it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I urge you to battle with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could offer prayers for his health and for the return of democracy in our nation."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's decision was the possibility of his "relocation to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of planning to seek refuge through a embassy office", a declaration said.
The judicial paperwork highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brasilia, is located around 8 miles from the former president's residence.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist American leader Donald Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.
Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in Brasilia and will have a detention review on the next day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the High Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with digital surveillance.
They also asked that Bolsonaro be authorized to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he required regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other health problems.
Details of Guilty Verdict
The former president was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plot which involved plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.
The plot was stopped because it didn't receive the endorsement of the armed forces officials. His successor was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.
But a week later, on January 8th, many his backers attacked and damaged public facilities in the federal district, Brasília.
The law enforcement took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.
The justices found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, reestablish control and bring him back to power.
At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
He was also barred from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 national vote.
