The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
