Matteo Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Exceptional Talent in Silver Lining for Struggling Lazio

The mood at Lazio's home ground was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had allowed a total of 10 goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Coming Unstitched?

Had their campaign coming unstitched, or had there never been a binding element maintaining its structure in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager in the summer transfer window, but then he to later acknowledge that the board had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were about to receive for accounting issues. Reports that he could resign were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

Lazio appeared equally disorganized in their performances as off the field, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other opening fixtures, which included the capital clash. Throughout this period, observers have struggled to determine if progress is being made or imploding.

The Youngster's Unexpected Comeback

A single player kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He spent the last one with Parma on loan and, early this summer, his owning club were advocating for him to remain there a while longer. The signing restriction forced a rethink. They were unable to reduce their roster without replacements.

Cancellieri arrived initially when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, the vast majority of those from the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Discovering His Best Role

Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to determine the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
