This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like conventional body horror, but beneath Together lies a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have stayed together for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The story begins when Tim and Millie transition from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their new home, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The entire film is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes during something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is amplified by the fact he can’t drive and needs Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that come with long-term unions over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to a partner, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for staying single. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can experience right now.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
